CBS this fall has featured HOSTS for HOSPITALS and the growing need for temporary housing among patients and families traveling to the Philadelphia area for medical care.

Viewers met Don Legere and his wife Kathy from New Hampshire. Don, who has scleroderma and interstitial lung disease, was referred to Temple University Hospital for a lung transplant. Through HOSTS for HOSPITALS, they were matched with hosts three months before surgery. Don received his left lung on Memorial Day.“We call this our home away from home,” Kathy shared.

Having space allowed their four children and extended family from across the country to visit and stay while Don was in the hospital. “We couldn’t imagine trying to be comfortable in a hotel for five months,” she said. HOSTS for HOSPITALS found them a peaceful, more rural setting that felt right for their family.

The story also highlighted longtime hosts Patty and Mike Neeb of Paoli, who have welcomed families for over a decade. “Several of them I’m still in touch with, which has been really special,” Patty said. One touching note in their guest book reads: “Be thankful for every sentence, be thankful for every question.”

At HOSTS for HOSPITALS, these stories show the power of opening a home during life’s hardest moments. With lodging requests growing, we need more hosts. If you have extra space, you can make a real difference. Learn more: https://hostsforhospitals.org | 484-380-2999 | lodging@hostsforhospitals.org
